One of the down sides of working 110km from your home is the commute. It takes me about an hour and 10 minutes each way, which is one of the reasons why I only work 3 days a week (the other being I don't want to work full time).
Most of the time I don't really mind the drive. There is very little traffic; it is 100km/hour the whole way (except through the town which only takes 2 minutes) and the scenery is beautiful. I keep meaning to stop on the way home and take some photos, but usually I am just so focused on getting home that I forget until it is too late.
In the morning I listen to ABC 702 and catch up on the news and current affairs. We don't like to put the news on the television with the kids around, so I find that this is an opportunity to stay up to date. In the afternoons I usually listen to ABC 702 as well... EXCEPT... they keep putting the cricket on instead of the regular drive program(????)
I am not a cricket fan, at the best of times. Playing a game for 5 days and then nobody wins is possibly the stupidest way to end a game ever. I kind of get watching 1 day matches or 20/20, but even then I have no desire to watch them often, and absolutely zero desire to listen to it on the radio. All the talk of leg off and on completely passes over my head. The other day I listened to India vs Sri Lanka (or something similar). There really are not a lot of options out here!
Which brings me to the point of this post. I am on the hunt for some good books to listen to while I am driving. Nothing too intense or hard to understand, because I need to concentrate on the driving. I've never really listened to audio books before but I am going to give it a try... because if I have to listen to another cricket match on the way home, I will probably just drive the car straight off the road and into a tree!
Help me out please! What are some good books to listen to while driving?
Now, that's so sad Jo, not enjoying the cricket. I remember driving all the way to Wagga once, listening to the cricket. But if you must, try Cloudstreet by Tim Winton.
ReplyDeleteMargaret, as you know, I have a genetic predisposition to avoid all sport related stuff!
DeleteI work about 40kms from home, and the drive can take over an hour and a half some days. Sydney traffic sucks! This is why I mostly take the train. I would much prefer a country drive, although an hour in the car each way is tough, regardless of the scenery!
ReplyDeleteI've not listened to audio books, so can't help there, but I certainly understand why you don't wish to listen to the cricket! Good luck, I hope you find some.
I definitely am not missing Sydney traffic, though I was very lucky and only had a half hour drive with not too much traffic.
DeleteHarry Potter! Linguistically clever, plot driven, British accents! Later on your girls can listen to it too.
ReplyDeleteI thought of Harry Potter, but I have already read them all several times... but you are right about the British accent! Trying to think of something similar which might be good!
DeleteJo, I am hearing you!! My Commute when working is 100km and in summer I can't stand the cricket!
ReplyDeleteI've used my iPod to download podcasts of the Conversation Hour or othe radio programs I never get to listen to.
Muddy Hubby likes autobiographies on his for when he's on the tractor.
Our local library has also just set up audiobooks online so we can download them and listen to them, cheaper than iTunes.
