Friday: On My Mind

+ It has been hot here lately. I guess that is no surprise to any one in Australia. Not just a bit warm, but relentless, energy sucking, cranky making hot. I am a summer person all the way. Give me high 20s and early 30s and I am a happy camper. But 37+ degrees (Celsius - that's around 100 Fahrenheit for those playing along) with no relief is hard to take. It is almost enough to make me want to go back to air conditioned work (almost).

The farm house has one of those box air conditioners which doesn't work, so I am going to get a replacement ASAP!

+ Our summer harvest is coming along. We have beetroot and zucchinis ready for harvesting. In the next month we will have a lot more too. Country Boy gave me the River Cottage DVD for Christmas, and we are taking inspiration from Hugh (we are on first name basis). Stay tuned on for some new recipes in the coming weeks!

+ I have finished all the back to school shopping after a dash to town to get a replacement piece for the water pump. I'm feeling mighty smug about it too. Now I just need to label about 100 million items. The girls do swimming everyday for the first 2 weeks of term so absolutely every item of clothing needs to be labelled. Meg is beyond excited about starting school. Every few days she tries on her uniform or shoes just to check they are still ok.

+ I cracked it at the kids last night. I hate it when I do it but my goodness I felt justified. They leave a total path of destruction everywhere they go. If you have tips to get kids to pick up as they go, please please share them with me. I am the first to admit that I am not the neatest person on earth, but this has to be seen to be believed!

+ We have nothing planned for the weekend which sounds perfect. I may continue to plough my way through my pile of books. Next week we are heading up to Sydney to see my family for a few days, before my sister returns to SE Asia for another year. I'm also taking the opportunity to go to Ikea *rubs hands together in anticipation*.

  3. Oh my god I want your house. It's beautiful!!!! I have a little one starting school this year too - I am more excited than she is, it seems. My 3 year old is definitely leaving a wake of destruction - not just mess, but she seems to break or deface everything she sees at the moment. Kids - who'd have em?

  4. I hate heat. And I am not usually a summer person. Give me teens all the way. You can always get warmer!
    Good luck air conditioner purchasing.

  5. Hi! Take a BIG trailer to IKEA :) Understand completely about the tidy up thing, I found though when I tried to get my kiddos to tidy up as they went I was just at them all day about it, now we have a '10 minute tidy up' a couple of times a day only, I put the music on for this time and we run around together packing stuff away they are not using at the time. Seems to have helped with the mess and my disposition! Friends of mine have the only one thing out at a time rule but it just didn't work with my kids who mix farm animals with cars and fairies etc etc!! Thinking of you with lack of A/C. Not fun at the moment for sure.

  6. I saw "River Cottage" on Foxtel when I was at my folks' house over New Year's. Why did I not know about him earlier?

  11. Hugh has been a firm fave in our house for many years. In fact, when we travelled round Oz 10 years ago we named our 4wd Fearnley in his honour!

We get ridiculous temps over here in Dubai - at least three months of 40+ temps even reaching 50 quite often. Difference is the place has been built for the heat, air con everywhere, even bus shelters are air conditioned.

  13. Oh, I am sorry ladies, but I have sent Hugh a betrothal request. No, he hasn't accepted yet, but I know he is busy in the cottage this time of year. Its a matter of days now - I have my wedding dress all made, and have asked his pigs to be bridesmaids.

    Sadly, you all missed out.

    Love this blog, great writing!
